New Dog - New Blog

I haven't written in awhile ... sorry! So, I found a new dog back in mid-June and brought him home at 8 weeks of age. "Cody" is 1/2 Border Collie, 1/2 Australian Cattle Dog. I've given him a designer name to keep up with the other desiger dogs - he's a "Bordattle Dog!" He's awesome, and shows signs of exactly what I'm looking for in a SAR dog. He's pretty fearless, has no problem climbing up or down on anything I ask him to, has a lot of drive, and is a little pain in the butt! Just what I was looking for.

We've already started his training by exposing him to lots of people, dogs and surfaces. He lOVES tug of war, which is great, and he's found his bark! It took a few weeks to get him to bark, but once he found it, he figured out how to use it, and use it, and use it! He's a little barking maniac now. We've had him on some low equipment, and he doesn't seem to have any problems with being on equipment. He hasn't been up very high yet, except for the little playing I've done with him on the rubble piles to get him familar with them, but nothing seems to bother him.

Unfortunately, on October 30th, Cody broke his front right foreleg. We have no idea how he did it. He went out to go to the bathroom, and came back in limping and not putting weight on his foot. After a metal brace, a few screws, and $3,000 later, he's as good as new. Seriously - we just had him re-xrayed last week and all looks good. The vet has given him the "ok" to continue with his training. Woo Hoo! We're looking forward to 2009, and hope to certify by the end of the year, or early in 2010. Keep checking back for more Cody updates!
